In association with Friends of the Elderly and the 'Say No To Ageism Week' campaign (19-23 May).

Friends of the Elderly are combating ageism by putting out a call to find the oldest working person in every county in Ireland.

Friends of the Elderly want to hear from the oldest farmer, the oldest butcher, the oldest baker, the oldest barman, the oldest chef, the oldest GP, the oldest vet, the oldest gardener, the oldest mechanic, the oldest shop assistant etc.

The oldest working person in each county will be forwarded to the national final to coincide with 'Say No To Ageism Week' which runs from 19th to 23rd May. Ireland's Oldest Working Person 2008 will receive their award on Friday 23 May.

Dermot Kirwan, Friends of the Elderly says, "We believe that working life doesn't have to stop when you get the pension book. The older person has much to contribute to any working environment. Their experience, wisdom, skills and practical approach can be a good balance to our frenetic, short-term work practices. There are many wonderful examples in every part of Ireland of people continuing to lead active working lives in their later years. We want to hear about them. We want a nomination from every profession."

The criteria is that the older person must work for at least 20 hours a week.

'Say No To Ageism Week' is sponsored by The Equality Authority
