In 2001, the EPA estimated that the Maigue and the Deel were the most polluted rivers in the Country in terms of phosphorous loading. Overall, only 30% of the rivers in hydrometric area 24, ( which contains the Maigue and Deel catchments) are classes as unpolluted, compared with a national average of 70%.

In 2003 there was 81,000 tons of waste disposed in the Landfill site in Gortadroma. Limerick County Council provides recycling facilities throughout the County with 49 recycling centers and the new Household Waste Recycling centers in Newcastle West and Kilmallock.
